Safety & communication tips for small business owners

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times. Small business owners (like you) have had to change the way they work – whether it’s moving to an all-remote setup or taking business completely online.

Fortunately, there are a lot of ways you can help your business. Whether it’s keeping up communication with customers or ensuring the safety of your employees, sending the right message matters more than ever.

Here, we’re covering tactical tips and purposeful products that can help you convey this message…regardless of what stage of business you’re in.

Keep employees up-to-date with new policies and information.

Make health-focused policies easy to understand with clear messaging and eye-catching graphics. Whether it’s a handwashing how-to chart, a COVID-19 symptom list, or a social distancing infographic, these resources can help keep your employees (and your workplace) safe.

You can also use this time to get creative with employee communication. Use a video conferencing platform (like Zoom) to hold virtual staff meetings.

Keep customers safe.

Many essential businesses are still open – if you’re one of them, make sure to educate customers with relevant COVID-19 awareness materials. The World Health Organization recommends staying six feet apart, so hang a social distancing infographic at the entryway and place stickers on the ground where customers can safely wait in line.

Right now, cleanliness counts. Reassure customers that you’re doing everything you can to minimize germs in your space…maybe with a poster detailing your sanitation regimen, or a sign outlining employee safeguards (like masks and gloves). And if you’re providing hand sanitizer and wipes throughout your store, let customers know where they can find them.

If the pandemic has inspired new offerings or caused changes in policy, use posters to inform your customers. Whether it’s free delivery for senior citizens, changes in hours or some type of DIY kit, make sure customers know that you’re doing everything you can to adapt and accommodate.

If you want to get really creative, make your own video for Instagram or Facebook demonstrating what you’re doing to stay safe. Think about filming a social distancing demo, a sanitization routine, or a touch-free takeout transaction.

Keep customers in the know.

Right now, many small businesses have had to temporarily shutter their brick-and-mortar establishments. If you’re one of them, you can still take this opportunity to communicate with customers who are driving or walking by your store. Hang posters in your windows with information about rescheduling appointments or buying gift cards online, or display a banner thanking them for their support.

Snap a photo of your decked-out storefront and share it on your favorite social  channel…your customers will love getting an update.

And if you’re still up and running (virtually!) make sure customers know that you’re open for business. Hang signs, mail postcards, send an email, or post on social media to remind customers that they can shop online – and promote any new offerings and delivery options.
