Printing Processes
Gang-Run Printing
The system of grouping and printing customers’ orders onto one sheet is called gang-run printing. Once a sheet is laid out digitally, it is copied again and again to match the quantity needed. If all of these customers ordered a quantity of 250 – 250 sheets would be printed and then cut, assembled, packaged and shipped. Because of lower labor and production costs associated with this method of production, Vistaprint achieves low unit costs. This allows us to pass on our savings to you.
CMYK Printing (also known as Process Printing or 4-Color Printing)
All of our products are printed using a four-color (CMYK) process. We use state-of-the-art, ink-based presses, resulting in unlimited color combinations and optimum print quality. CMYK printing is an industry standard method of printing in full color. CMYK actually stands for the four colors used as part of this printing standard. C is Cyan, M is Magenta, Y is Yellow, and K is for 'Key,' a term printer’s use for Black ink.
Offset Printing
For most products printed in quantities greater than 100, we typically use a 4-Color Offset Printing process. In this process the product image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber roller and then to the paper, using four different ink colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black). This process provides the highest level of printing quality and is the most effective in delivering consistency and speed in high volume print runs.
CMYK printing does a good job of reproducing most color photographs. The full-color photograph is scanned and then separated into its C-M-Y-K components. Once the separations are processed and separate 'plates' are made for each of the CMYK colors, the printer runs the ink through the plates on the press. The result is a full color image printed on paper.
CMYK is the most economical method of reproducing full-color images in the highest quality. Most magazines and glossy collateral are printed using CMYK.
Digital Printing
The four-color process is also utilized in digital printing. In digital printing, however, a digital image is used to transfer the image directly onto plain paper without the use of traditional offset rollers and plates. Our products of quantities of less than 100 are typically printed using a digital printing process.
RGB vs CMYK
CMYK are the colors used in our printing process, whereas RGB (Red, Green and Blue) are the colors used by monitors and other screen displays. Since computer monitors use a different color definition (RGB) than that used by professional printers (CMYK), converting the document and printer to use the CMYK color definitions will result in a more accurate representation of the final printed color. Many of the bright values produced by the monitor cannot be reproduced in print.
PMS/Spot Colors
PMS (Pantone Matching System) Colors, also known as Spot Colors, are pre-mixed custom colors. Unlike CMYK printing which mixes four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) to produce most of the colors that you see in normal magazines and printed color books, PMS colors use a specific mix of pigments to create colors that reproduce accurately in print. Because PMS colors are pre-mixed at a factory, it is nearly impossible to get an exact match by using CMYK, but in most cases, it is a fairly accurate representation of the color.
Text Color
The layering of inks used in the CMYK process can reduce the clarity of details in fonts. If type is smaller than 9 pt (1/8”), it is recommended that the text color be black. If black will not be acceptable, using cyan, magenta or yellow ink will increase the clarity of the small fonts.
CMYK Printing
Make sure to check your document’s color settings. If you print in RGB, the colors you see on screen will be much different than the printed colors. To get the best possible color match, you should convert images and design to CMYK. JPEG files are almost always in RGB unless explicitly saved in CMYK.
Setting CMYK in InDesign
- Go to the Edit Menu and choose Color Settings
- Make sure you are in Working Space: CMYK: ‘U.S. Web Coated(SWOP) v2’. The RGB value will not affect your design.
To change color settings
- Go to the Edit Menu and choose Convert to Profile
- Change the Destination Space to CMYK: ‘U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2’ and click OK.
Setting CMYK in Photoshop
- Go to the Image Menu and choose Color Mode
- A check mark will appear next to current color mode
- Select CMYK Color
Setting CMYK in Illustrator
- Go to the File Menu and choose Document Color Mode
- A check mark will appear next to current color mode
- Select CMYK Color
Digital Images
You may create printed products on our website using digitized images from a variety of sources. Your designs, photos and images can come from a digital camera, scanner, or the Web. Any image you plan to use must be saved at approximately 300-dpi at 100% output size for the very best printing results. It’s helpful to know that shrinking an image on a product will increase its resolution. For example, an image captured at 600 x 900 pixels has 150-dpi at 4” x 6”. However, it can be printed at 300-dpi by reducing its dimensions on the product to 2” x 3”.
Images from a Digital Camera
If you wish to use images from a digital camera, before you snap pictures make sure the camera is set at a high enough resolution to result in 300-dpi at the intended photo print size. Most cameras have various settings for resolutions. The highest resolution for your camera depends on how many megapixels it has.
You cannot increase the resolution of a photo after it is taken, except by reducing its printed dimensions (after you upload the image). Be careful when cropping a photo after it is taken. Cropping will reduce the number of pixels in the final image.
Images from a Scanner
Like a digital camera, a scanner must be preset to the proper resolution before image capture. Many scanners default to 150-dpi (or spi). Set your scanner’s resolution so that it results in 300-dpi at the image’s final print size. If your resulting scanned image is smaller than the recommended size or has less dpi than you need, you should either rescan your original at a higher resolution, or use the image for a smaller printed area.
Images from the Web
Images found on the web are typically at a resolution of 72-dpi. This resolution is much too low for quality printing. In addition, most images on the web are protected by copyright laws. For these reasons, we do not recommend using images from the web.
File Sizes
The maximum file size for uploads is varies by product from 8-15MB. You’ll be notified if a file is too large. To reduce file size, take a look at these tips.
Reducing Image Size Reduction with Adobe Illustrator
- Flatten the Illustrator file.
- Open the .ai file in Photoshop and make sure when Photoshop opens the file it is 1063 x 614 pixels.*
- Save the file as a .psd to upload.
- *If your Illustrator file is too large when you open it in Photoshop, this means that you have an object extending beyond the art board. Open the file in Illustrator and make sure NO text or objects go past the black box. Resave the file and go through steps 1-3 again.
Tips on Image Size Reduction using Photoshop
- To decrease size of a Photoshop file, flatten the file.
- If it is still too large, save it as a .pdf and select encoding: jpeg. First select #12 quality.
- Save the .pdf and check the file size. If the file is still too large, try saving it at lesser and lesser quality until it is small enough to upload.
Tips on Image Size Reduction using other programs
If your file is larger than 4MB, you can try saving it as a PDF, JPEG or TIF format. These file formats compress images in different ways to achieve a smaller file size. - PDF is a good choice for simple line art.
- JPEG reduces the number of pixels and will work well for photographs that are too large to upload.
- GIF compresses files by reducing the number of colors displayed in the image. Therefor, it does not work very well for color photos. It is best for online display.
- TIF is another recommended file format for good quality printing results.
